We had a rooster sick with a respiratory issue and he recovered and wasn’t near this bad. Our hen was perfectly fine yesterday, sneezing and slinging snot this morning, and now she can’t breathe. Shes about 5-6 months old. We called our vet and they said there’s nothing we can do since antibiotics mean throwing out our eggs forever. Idk what to do. I gave her electrolyte water with probiotics.

Can you telll us what symptoms you are seeing? Are there bubbles or foam in either eye, mucus from the beak or nostrils, swelling around the eye or face, sneeze or cough? Is there any bad odor? How does her crop feel? Have you added any new birds recently? Few antibiotics are approved for chickens. One that is, is Tylosin powder to use in the water. It treats mycoplasma (MG) a chronic respiratory disease. Denagard or Tiagard is another drug used. Other antibiotics such as oxytetracycline, doxycycline, or sulfa antibiotics can be used with an egg withdrawal time. Vets are prohibited from prescribing Baytril (enrofloxacin) since it is against FDA regs, although some use it with a long egg withdrawal time. If the chicken has a virus, then antibiotics don’t help unless there is a secondary bacterial infection. I would get the Tylosin and give it in the water 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days only to her.

Thanks for all the info! We must’ve had a chicken miracle or she just aspirated water or choked on something because she’s totally fine now shes perked up and quit wheezing. Her breathing was very loud and labored. Now there’s no snot, no runny eyes, no sneezing, no labored breathing, and her color has come back. We’re gonna check on her one more time tonight and keep her separated until tomorrow morning and see how she is.

Sometimes a full crop of liquid when a crop problem is happening, can cause rattly breathing especially if crop contents come back up into the throat if the crop is accidentally pushed or squeezed. Glad she seems back to normal, but keep an eye on her for any of the symptoms listed above in post 3.
