My old hen somehow lost a toenail from each foot a few weeks ago. One is growing back in as a small, sharp nail. The other is big, dark, round, and looks strange. I am wondering what I should do about it, assuming it is a foot issue that needs addressing. The weather was sub-zero a couple weeks before that, so I wonder about frostbite, even though I took precautions and found none at the time.
Checklist:
1) 7yo Easter Egger (whitish feathers, green feet and egg shells.)
2) normal behavior
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? A few weeks.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. I am wondering if this is that.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. No idea.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. (Recently switched to organic layer feed from normal.)
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal, but wet. It's hot, here.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? None.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? It depends on the issue, I guess.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Attached.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Coop with sand/wood chips/wood ash bedding with some straw they pulled out from a bale I had over the nest boxes. The sand/dust/ashes were in a dusting area, but now all mixed into the wood chips and vice versa.
