doc gives 1% - 2% chance. Should we self medicate, Nutridrench, Vit B & pray for the best? Or should we have her put to sleep? One of husband's girls & l feel so bad, for not noticing sooner.
Her pouch full of nasty, yellow fluid. Hanging low, making her waddle & kick feet out/back, when she walks. Pouch excessively warm. Very nice coloring of comb, eyes, ear flaps. Seems alert, eyes wide open, been eating. Took straight to vet, so no time to see if drinking & pooing.

She has Septic Paradiotis(?)

Is it her lower belly between the legs that is full and hanging low? That is probably water belly, also called ascites. Egg yolk peritonitis, cancer, and heart failure can cause it. Removing fluid occasionally may help relieve pressure and ease breathing. The infection and the water belly are unfortunately eventually deadly. Very sorry about your chicken. This is a common problem with hens.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, we had her put to sleep. We didn't want her to have to endure any more stress, trauma, pain, etc than she already had/was. We were given little chance of her surviving any treatment.
Know we did the right thing, but it doesn"t help the pain in my broken heart.

TY for reply. I'd never thought chickens were so hard to raise/keep around. Grandma had a four chickens for yrs, when l was young (45 yrs ago), and never had any problems w/them. They slept on open, bk.porch, ate food scraps & foraged for bugs & worms. All of them, that l remember, died of old age.
Must be all the chemicals that's been 'added' to everything in the last half century???????
TY again for info. Will have to put it in my long list of sickness & diseases chickens are likely to get.

Sorry for your loss, but glad that she is not suffering. Many of today’s hens are bred for laying eggs every day, while the more traditional heritage hens will lay only 2 or 3 times a week. Any hen can get reproductive problems or cancer after 2-3 years of age, but many people in the past just culled and butchered their older chickens for meat.
