Help my gorgeous black copper marans hen has a swollen eye. It is just one side and it started yesterday and is now awful looking and pussy. She is swollen from beak to eye and the eye looks nasty. Any help would be much appreciated. She is 9 months old and a recent acquisition. It may be an injury as they are new bird in a new coop.

You must wash it! Try to open it a wee bit, and see if her eye is injured first, and also check the area for skin damage, or even snake bit marks. If the eye is off, your gonna have to put some antibacterial ointment in it. I'd first rinse it with salt water, mix 1/4 tsp salt with 2 c. warm water. Let it set 10 minutes, than gently pour the clear water into another cup, and use the clear water (not the salt particles at the bottem) to rinse her eye. Salt helps kill bacteria. Use your clean finger to apply a small amount of the antibacterial ointment to her eye. Clean, wipe off puss, and retreat morning and night for a day or two. IF it gets worse, your gonna need a vet to save her.
