So I have a roughly 1.5 year old flock of hens. To my knowledge they're all hens... I went out just a few minutes ago and Jessi (australorp hen) hand mounted and for what it's worth looked like she was breeding Noodles (Wyandotte Hen 5years). Do hens ever do this? Jessi has always looked like she had a larger comb/waddles but I just thought that was how the breed was. She doesn't crow and they have a communal nest where everyone lays their eggs so I don't ever know who lays what. I know many other species the females will mount other females for dominancy. If this is so then Jessi just took a huge step because she's always been the under dog chicken and Noodles very much the alpha. Noodles didn't seem to fight her off or run away after she had been "bred" and she usually challenges anything that takes a second look at her.
