Question? How can one keep the hens out of the house yard. It has a 4' picket fence to keep cows, horses, goats out. Our house is in the middle of the pasture and the hen coops are portable and movable all over the pasture. I move them to fertilize the pasture and close the hens up at night for predator security. But they come to the yard and scratch the mulch out of the flowerbeds and into the yard. I shoot them with my red ryder BB gun and yell at them. They know to skedattle out of the yard. Then I have to blow the mulch every 2-3 days back into the flower beds again.

Any suggestion?

I keep them out of the garden with an extra 4' chicken wire fence above the regular fence. It is 6-7 feet tall. They stay out!!

That’s hilarious!!sounds like the Beverly hillbillies ,

Shooting “ at them” is not the same as shooting them . I feel your frustration but I doubt you’ll win this battle unless you want to be surrounded by a 6 foot fence..

I’m not a free ranging fan. My birds have a really large run and my yard and gardens are my space

I didn’t see the word At.

Good lord people , we live in the country we have B.B. guns and (gasp) real guns , it doesn’t mean anything except our predators are a little scarier then in the city ......

Shooting to scare your pets is a choice we have the right to make .. I wouldn’t do it because I have bad aim

We have regular guns too, no gasping over here. But cruelty is still cruelty. I’m still giving the benefit of the doubt that he meant to include the word at. It seems counterintuitive to shoot your own chickens.

Shooting em with the red ryder aint no different than a swat on the butt from the switch. It’s just about gettin their attention!
