Update: I added an additional 2” to the front of the nesting boxes. This seemed solve the problem, they are no longer able to kick the straw of the boxes. Thanks everyone for their help. What a great group of folks!

I also line mine with cardboard. If there is a wreck, you can pull out the cardboard and pitch it.

Great idea! I know some people also line theirs with cut up sections of empty feed bags for the same reason. I'm going to try this soon. I don't have broken eggs very often, but I'm sure it will make clean-up much easier when I do! I'm also going to experiment with some smallish puppy pee pads and see which I like better. We use shredded paper in our nests for bedding.
