Here are my Wyandottes who are sharing resposibilities for 5 brown leghorn chicks. They alternate setting with them at night. If they get spooked (like a vulture flies overhead) they squat together and the chicks hop between them. You can see them calling the chicks over for food in the pic.
That is so cute! I wish my Wyandottes would go broody, but I did have an Easter Egger go broody. She hatched out 3 "mutts" and is a wonderful mother to them.
My Wyandottes are 2 years old and now only lay about 1 - 2 eggs per week. Two have molted, but should be laying again. The one has tons of "fluff", slightly yellow legs and is very pretty = I think she's a "free-loader"!
That is pretty cool. I thought one of my hens was going broody and I thought about seeing if she would raise some of the chicks I ordered, but it was a false alarm.
