It seems that my hens seem to be wandering farther away from our yard now that we're in the midst of a drought. Is this because they are searching for healthy grass and softer soil or just because they are getting older?

yep ... my girls are always within sight of home; after dinner they cruise around front...and we live in the burbs, and probably the only chickens in the area, so cars and walkers will usually slow down and double 'check out' our two hens! ha ha!

With this dry weather, the grass is like straw. They very well could be exploring new areas looking for some yummy bugs or grass......My older hens started straying too far, so I started making them stay in the coop/run longer, and letting them out to free range later in the afternoon. That seemed to have worked.
