Hello All! My name is Melissa. We bought a home this past fall, and one of the main perks about it is that it came with a small coop that was in good condition. So we spent the weekend checking all of the run and placing a top on it, cleaning the coop up and doing inventory on what we would need to get started. I had chickens as a child and knew that my own little ones would love it, plus I missed having my girls and fresh eggs.
So last week a farmer had a few hatches and we picked up 3 Plymouth Barred Rocks, and he gave us what we think is a White Leghorn. He had Buff Orpingtons, RIR, Leghorns, etc, and it is looking mostly like a Leghorn to me. We had Domineckers as a kid and they were the broodiest, goofiest, mess but we enjoyed them. I'm hoping this small set is very similar.
My 6yr old and 2yr old have named them. The oddball is "Oscar" and the BR's are Whiskers, Zoltar, and Sparky. (My kids have watched too much Puss in Boots) We live in city limits and it is preferred to not have over 6 hens per acre, and they don't really want any roosters. So here's hoping we have a handful of layers lol.
