I'm sitting here reading as many topics that I can, and I heard a clicking sound. I looked down and saw our older "pound puppy" with extra long toenails.
How do you clip a dogs nails when they won't sit still for you and scream as if you are killing them even if you don't do anything to them. We do regular vet checks, and he clips them then, but they seem to grow very fast. Any ideas other than having them surgically removed? That will never happen!!!!!!!!!

I just use my legs to hold my pups down and basically wrestle em till the job is done lol. Just gotta do it and no way im carting her in the car for a half hr just to pay who knows how much to trim. Bleck

We use popcorn and a towel over their eyes to calm them. One nail at a time and after one or two they get a little hand of popcorn. After a while it becomes easier becasue they know that they get the treat.

That might just work

Mine really love popcorn! thanks

I know what your saying my 13 year old hound freaks when you have clip his nails. It usually takes to of us to hold him down and we only do one foot and take a break. Sorry I'm not much help but we have tried eveything.

I have that problem with our 90ish pound Newfie mix. She is getting very old and even with two of us we can't finish the job. We cover her with a blanket, give her treats and she completely panics. She yelps like we are cutting her toe off and tries to bite.

2 person job. Lay them on their side. Have one person against their back, holding their bottom legs and pinning weight over side of dog so they can't pop up. Put towel over the face. Trim carefully and bribe often.

If that doesn't work, any groomer should be able to manage. Petco and Petsmart here are errm $10? or something. Which is crazy expensive, but the stoopid Pittie/Labradork will NOT agree to his nails being done at home. I'm not sure on the exact cost because said stoopid dog gets a brush out, nail trim, teeth brushing, ear hairs plucked, a foofoo smelling spritz and a bandana for $18. Ear hair plucking and nail trim at the vet is $20. Stoopid dog acts STOOOOOOPID at the vet and takes 4 people to hold him down and still gets up a good 10 times in the process. Petsmart he acts like world's most wonderful dog, holds his feet up like an angel, cocks his head to the side while they pluck ear hair rougher than I do at home and he's just happy, happy, happy.

The $18 every 3 weeks is cheaper than the treatment for a raging ear infection which is what he'd get without the ear hair plucking, and you skip 3 plucking sessions, he gets the ear infection started. Which means because he's such a monster to treat to start with, with sore ears, they have to knock him out to get the hair and pus out of his ears, then treat. So it's easily $100. In a little over 2 months. Which will be repeated promptly again if we don't repluck the hair.

Said infections are why he's a total demon for his ears to be treated at home or for the vet. He also had nails in his pads when he was found. So he has reasons to HATE anything. Petsmart is fine because he can see out the window to watch everything else going on, and plus the general wonderful fun of Petsmart - COOKIES!!!!!! TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!! NEW PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - so he forgets to panic about the idea.

I have a very large Pit that has never let me cut his nails, he keeps them chewed perfectly. But then I have a 2 1/2 pound 15 year old chihuahua and it takes 2 of us with her wrapped in a towel.
