heritage turkeys

Better at...?

Last year a friend raised turkeys both BB and heritage. He got 40 pounds off the BB and 20 pounds from the heritage. So heritage are not better meat producers.

If you are trying to make money off heritage try preorder turkey for thanksgiving. You can get maybe 100 per bird.

Go to your state board here and ask around for local turkey breeders, ask them. They will be your best resource in this endeavor. They should know the local shows, what wins, what sells and give you advise on how to make a little money.

Use the search at the top and put in turkey and your state.

Turkeys at shows are only just starting to make a come back . . . doesn't mean they are great examples of the breed though. Most heritage breeds still need more work to get up to size of the SOP. And as there are few in a class, it is easy to have "SQ". But again, doesnot meant they are great birds . . . yet.

It takes years of work to produce good birds and even more to get a great one.

To charge $100 a bird you need to build a clientele . . . takes time and effort and years. IF it was that easy, everyone would be doing it.
