Hey fellow chicken owners. My girlfriend and I are brand new to the world of backyard chickens. I built a coop last month, and we picked up 3 pullets (2 barred rocks and 1 black australop) that we have had for a few weeks now. No eggs yet, but we've had a blast watching them roam around our fenced in yard and slowly interact with our Great Pyr. I have been reading the forums since winter researching about owning chickens, and I finally decided I should become an active participant.

Thanks to everyone who posts on this site; the information has helped us a lot. Below are a few picks of my coop and pullets.

do you see how the hens are laying in the corner against the wire? That's just how raccoons (and others) get a hold of them. They can slice thru chicken wire like it was spaghetti.

If you want to keep predators out, you need 1/2 inch hardware cloth as a perimeter from ground up to about 2 feet high. It will keep raccoons (with opposable thumbs) from grabbing any body part they can snag and chewing it off. They are probably one of the most gruesome attackers.

PS Nice coop

Thanks for the advice! I have some spare hardware cloth that I can put up around the coop this weekend.
