Hey there I have been coming on BYC for a while now and love the knowledge everyone has to share! I am a new farmer with a small place but big enough that I get overwhelmed with the possibiliies.
I have 9 chickens of various ages. I bought 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes at 2 weeks of age and now they are 9 weeks old, I hatched 3 bantums the week before I got those that are now 8 weeks old and all are in good health and feather. One of my Silvers we call stinky (she is snotty and bites alot) broke a toenail on the cage a few weeks ago. It got black and I tried to keep it clean and but she has since lost it. I think a new one is growing back from underneath so I try to keep it as clean as I can.
I have since hatched 6 out of 14 Jersey Giants but lost two in the first week of life for them. They are slowly feathering and just this week have put on some weight it seems. They are only 7 weeks but seems like they are the same size as the bantums without as many feathers. The bantums, one white one (named Chey), one rust colored one (Freeland) and one multicolored one (chicken little) who is very plump already. All are so sweet and can be handled easily. The Silvers are snotty but civilized a bit and will sit in my lap if I can catch them. The Jerseys are little brats and so curious. They come when called and even get in their carriers when needed as long as I put a stick through the side to imitate a worm. I have not named them as yet, since the differences in them are slight. I am now incubating some turkeys so I have a lot of learning to do still.
