I use pine shavings and I DO NOT clean it out weekly. I use a deep litter method, just adding more every once in a while. When I had smaller coops, I did a total clean out every six months or so, just adding more shavings until it was time to clean it out...

I use rice hulls. Once a week I clean out the poo with a kitty scoop for litter. Add a bit more rice hulls and watch the girls have fun scratching. Once a month I clean out the whole coop and put in fresh. But I'm new to this whole chicken thing and have only had my chickens for a month now.

I'm with gryeyes - I use the deep litter system. I have used shavings, pelleted wood (horse bedding), and ground corn cobs. I love the ground corn cobs, but it has become too expensive for me to use.
