I am new to chickens.....had fryers as a kid but that doesn't count! I live in Western WA State at the base of Mt. Rainier on 2 acres in the Western Red Cedar forest - - I am a dog groomer and agility instructor and am currently the slave to an Aussie , Border collie , and 2 siamese mutt cats - I have been kicking around the idea of keeping a few layers for a while now.....
My brother ( the perfectionist master electrician ) and I built a coop over the Christmas holiday as he was visiting from Minnesota. I showed him my design and he did a great job - - gave me a chance to hone my building skills as well - - it has a 4X6 enclosed coop and 6X12 outside run - - I hope to free range them as well.....
This site is proving to be extremely informative to a newbie like me - - I am definitely going to try the deep litter method in my enclosed 4X6 coop - I do not have my chicks yet - and am debating on the variety - - right now I am thinking I will have 8 ( allowing for a loss of one or two and hoping it doesn't happen but as you all know it could) Most likely will have 2 Silver laced Wyandottes - - 2 Gold laced Wyandottes - 2 Black Astralops and for fun will try a pair of Golden Polish - - hubby says NO ROOSTERS so I am trusting you all will keep my secret
~~
At first I thought 2 RIR but am debating that as well - - would love to find the Blue laced Wyandottes - but am not sure that will be too easy- - I am having a lot of trouble being patient waiting for chicks in February but am sure the time will go fast - - -
I am so glad to have found this forum and am ready to learn a lot more from all of you!
Here is a pic of my new coop - have a lot more painting, staining, and backfilling to do but my bro left that up to me! Now if it would just stop raining so I could get it done!
