(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

ANSWER: Not new to chickens as I was raised on a large farm with them and then upon moving to an acreagewith my partner got into having them again. We ARE, however, new to the button quail, which is what brought me to this forum.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

ANSWER: I couldn't tell you honestly, but my partner could. I'm more the maintenance and groundskeeper. Plus we locally have become the retirement home and safe shelter for the wayward and unwanted chickens and ducks. I know for sure we have 2 male ducks (surrenders) and 2 roosters (one just hatch and recently is becoming alpha the other is very very old and as of now thankfully no separation of the two is needed 🤞) If I had to guess on hens I'd say 10 or 11. (We lost 3 over the fall and winter, 2 of them to age and the other was attacked by a hawk and had to be put to rest). And if it goes as it has every year prior.... starting in about 4 weeks or so and continuing for about a month we will likely increase in numbers due to owners retiring out the older ladies and first time owners who are in over their heads or didn't check local ordinances and are no longer wanting them. We hatched 2 button quail that are doing well and a family member just surprised us with more eggs that are currently in their sauna.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Answer: Both our ducks are Muscovy. The old man is a Brahma and the cockerel is his and one of the Barred Rock Ladies. His sister is from another mother (our Silver Laced snooty lady) but the barred rock took over over hatching her. The other ladies are: one Ameraucana (she be crazy), a few Rhode Island Reds (my helpers), at least 2 buffs (Our lazy ladies) and the rest are crosses/unkowns. We typically don't let them sit on the eggs, but this time she hid where they were and there was no easy/safe way of removing and replacing with the fake ones, so we got 2 babies out of it.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The personality and the purposeful-ness that it gives the puppers. No other birds or animals, other than his chickens, are allowed on the grass when he is on duty. 😂

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Open water and Ice Fishing. I also, willingly, do most of the maintenance and repairs to our rental house/acreage as we are close with the owners and it was built in 1911. The age makes it a hobby 😂

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Answer: We have 3 kids, the youngest turns 16 this year.

Others around here include:

The random and pregnant cat that showed up (we are calling her fluffy cuz we just thought she was fluffy at first😅). She is too far along and is sweet, so we are feeding and sheltering her with the plan to spay her 1st chance we get.

We also have our 3 furry kids aka dogs. The oldest, Jayda is turning 10 and is a blue heeler.

Jayda gave us a scare a couple years back, so we got a puppy, as we wanted her to be a part of that process. So the youngest is Dominic and he is an Australian Sheppard/heeler mix.

The middle guy, Badger, is turning 6 this year and is the biggest baby but also the largest. He is a Great Pyrenees and finally stopped growing at 165lbs (not overweight just didn't stop growing).

As for my partner, she works in the education field and likes to surprise me at least a few times a year with "new to us" rescued or unwanted animals. Well, we either keep them or find a nice appropriate home for them.

Lastly, myself.... I am a 100% disabled veteran due to complexities of my PTSD. That being said, our little homestead is my sanctuary of sorts. And most important thing to know about me..... though I will use humor with most things please know I'm crazy lucky and soooo very thankful to have everything and everyone I talked about above.....so much so that I am on here so that I can learn everything I can to build the best possible button quail mansion/housing/hidey hole things ever for her buttons.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

ANSWER: I found the page using google and after looking at other forums and comparing the information, I am here.

On a personal note: For the forum creators, moderators and any others that make it happen.... you provide amazing and informative content. And I 100% think/believe out of all the places I've looked, read articles and conversations, and search through posts at over the last week..... you hands down not only the highest quality of content and the most expansive variety of content but also the easiest to navigate through. So thank you! 🙏🙌🫶
