Hey I found A Cool Hatchery

Personally i REALLY love mcMurray's. They have been helpful, patient, kind and shipped GREAT chicks. I'm only a 150 miles away but still had the chicks shipped. THe post office was fantastic also. I wasn't sure how the post office worked a Sunday pickup on memorial day weekend and worried myself into a tizzy.

BUt the call came at 7 pm on the Sunday of Memorial weekend. YEAH! They guy as teh Distribution Center was a riot... he teased me cause I was so excited. This was my first order and I just can't bring myself to order from anywhere else.

There are a few breeders I've contacted but I just don't see how any other hatchery could live up to the standard McMurray has set... not the mention the fabulous postal workers.

Thanks again!

Would you still recommend getting chicks from them? Them and Mypetchicken.com are the only places that will ship me 3 chickens, and Nature's is a lot closer (30 minutes away).

The chicks might not be coming from their office location though (well they won't in either case). They will most likely drop ship from another hatchery that could be the other side of the country.

I feel, and certainly hope, that most people on here realize that most postal workers are trying to do their job as well as they can. Obviously, there are going to be exceptions, as in any business. Certainly, if there is a problem with the USPS, it is basically with overall policies or systems on handling live chicks, not with local employees. And I am very glad to hear what you said about leaving mail on "hot trucks."

Special delivery for chicks on a Sunday was not an option for me. I have no idea whether that had to do with how the hatchery ships or with local postal service, but I was certainly told by the local PO that nothing happens on a Sunday here. Period.

A McMurray employee told me they ship on Saturday because there is more room on the airplanes that day, so it is more likely the chicks will move expeditiously. (More likely??? I would not have placed the order if I had heard this first. The website gave no clue they had a Saturday shipping policy.) But they shipped on Thursday or Friday, not Saturday, and the chicks arrived at the local PO on Tuesday, and over 1/3 were dead. The locals were on the lookout for the chicks Monday, I talked with them, they did not arrive til early Tuesday; I have no problem with the local workers. I strongly suspect that the problem here is with the two GA PO hubs that mail goes through. It seems to affect everything shipped to me by mail. Regardless, I will not order form MM again because of the Saturday shipping.

As for Nature's Hatchery, I would personally not deal with a hatchery (or breeder) that did not allow pickup. That just sets off too many alarms. Biosecurity isn't that hard to maintain.

I know a lady in Wisconsin that raises lavender silkies... Someone intentionally destroyed her flock (worth thousands) by coming on the property (they owned sick birds). I do not let anyone in the drive who I do not know...
