My name is Tamara, I am 24, and I am located in the East Bay, CA.

So, I am just purchasing my first house, and in my excitement over having a YARD again, I am in the advanced planning stages of getting stuff together, and my boyfriend and I would really love to get some chickens.

I have little to no experience with chickens, and my boyfriend has experience in keeping, breeding and raising chickens. He kept bantums and aracuna/americunas before. We currently have dogs, (indoor) cats, and I have plenty of experience keeping and breeding a variety of reptile species.

I have been looking at hatchery sites, and the crested breeds (houdans and polish) have REALLY caught my eye. I want one of every color variation! hahah.

I already know that I dont plan to have a rooster (Though I can because my city and county allow it, I dont personally want to be awoken early morning. He had a rooster when we first met, and it drove me crazy.

I dont eat a ton of eggs, though I do like them, and I am not interested in butchering my own chickens for food, these will be pet chickens, with the occasional egg or three. :p

I have a really great location for the coop and run to be set up (between the fence and my house, along the fence that goes to the front yard, in the back yard) it is ~ 10 ft wide, and 20+ ft long. I know my way around some wood, (I've made some custom cages, and indoor rabbit cages in the past) can point me in the direction of fun ideas.

Sorry about the long read, I am stoked about checking out the forum, and joining the chicken owners club!

I live on the Peninsula. I just ordered my first chicks. They will arrive at the end of April. I am very excited and have put the plans together for my coop. Now I need to get my DH started on the building part!!!
