In the Brooder
I just wanted to say Hello. I am newly retired and am finally able to try my hand at hatching new babies. I just got some Ameruacana splash eggs and set them just two days ago. I currently have three hens. One ameruracana one black sex linked and one that was supposed to be a maran but she is small and lays almost a rose colored egg, who knows right?
I live in the city and can have 5 hens , no roos so I worry about hatching all roos. We will see. I am obsessing over temp and humidity right now being new at this. I have had up to 4 thermometers with up to 2 degrees difference. Bought two identical thermometers and they even varied up to a degree.
So I have decided to trust going on average temp and leave it up to the chicken gods. Can't wait to candle them and see what I have. These are shipped eggs so hope for about half to develop.
I have a nice coop for my girls and right now they are producing great about three eggs a day from three hens. I love to study the nutrition for my creatures. Seems to be doing ok for now they all look great.
Had a problem with predators the last two years ( this is my 3rd year) Raccoons got 4 and hawks were a real problem last year not so many this year. Cut away a lot of extra shrubs so less hiding places for the coons and I am diligent about putting the girls up early evening. Believe it or not scare crows seem to help with the hawks.I use lights pointed away from the coop also.
Enjoy all of the comments and hints from this group.
Wishing you all lovely happy chickens!
