I'm Connie and while not exactly new to chickens I’ve found a whole new passion for my “dinosaurs”.
We started out a couple of springs ago with a few hybrids, 3 girls (we affectionately named them after the golden girls) and 1 rooster named Stan. We lost all but Rose (how fitting). We had a rooster that was dropped off and he immediately bonded with Rose and it was just them for about a year. I finally got my chicken yard/coup built and we now have 5 Isa Browns and 6 Silkies and 2 Barred Rocks (hatched in March/April) that we added to the mix. Everyone does well overall. I’ve got 1 confirmed Silkie rooster and I’m still trying to determine if one of my Barred Rocks is a rooster.
We now have 18 more chicks that we will be introducing eventually. Some Cuckoo Marans, Buff Orppingtons, Buff Brahmas, Black Giants, Mottled Houdans, and Wyandottes. All but the Houdans were pullets so hoping it will stay that way.
We have 9 indoor/outdoor cats that assist in the protection of the chickens. We also have 7 dogs that use the doggie door so we have never really had any problems with predators. We did still take the necessary precautions when building the yard to hopefully keep them safe.
Looking forward to learning all I can here. My favorite times of the day is when I can go sit with my chickens. They love string cheese!
Thanks for having me.
