Welcome to BYC!

This sounds like a good plan. When you do begin the mixing, keep the young birds in a caged area within the flock for several weeks so everybody sees, nobody touches. After a few weeks, the mixing goes fairly well. Just always watch that first day and that week in case something does go bad. Always intervene if it turns bloody.

Enjoy your new chicks and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! My advice to you is to make sure you use 1/4 inch hardware cloth (very strong mesh wire) for your run rather than chicken wire....most anything can break through chicken wire to get to your chicks. And you may want to place the coop/run in a fenced area away from the dogs to prevent stress from barking and chasing. Good luck to you.

My dogs will be in a different area behind a 6ft high wooden fence. We have an acre and the front of our house is off a lane, so we plan on putting the chickens in an area in the front. We already have a large 2 story shed by our pool, so I am taking about 1/3 of the bottom that we really don't use except for junk that can be moved the other side. I think it is about 12 x 8. There is a double door out to the yard and a single door going to the pool area. The double door did open to a wooden deck which I tore up because they were starting to rot. So that area will be made into part of the run. I am planning on putting hardware cloth there.
