I am a 50 yr. old "crazy bird lady" (bird enthusiast) and a lifelong pet chicken owner. When I was a teen, I showed my chickens at the County fair, and worked there as a poultry judge's assistant for many years. I've had many types of chickens over the years, and other kinds of poultry like turkeys, ducks, quail, pigeons--all of them pets and very tame. Unfortunately where I live now I am very limited in what is allowed so I only have two chickens at the moment. My chickens are like family members and are spoiled. They are the luckiest chickens alive! I also currently have many pet birds of all kinds (parrots, canaries, finches, pigeons) and cats, who get along fine with the birds. I have an adult son who lives with me and is just as bird-crazy as I am. I love to talk about chickens and tell people what outstanding pets they can be, but most people seem to have a mental block and misconceptions about chickens.

It's nice to have you here! You're right about a lot of folks not realizing poultry is such fun, that's why it's great to come here...no one here will ever say you talk too much about your birds :)

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your birds, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
