My name is Megan and I'm a first time poultry owner. We were getting eggs from a few friends who have ranches. I noticed most of the eggs were fertilized. So I borrowed an incubator and tossed some eggs in with no real plans figuring I would give any chicks to friends that wanted them. I live in a pretty rural area so backyard chickens are pretty common around here, I figured they would be easy enough to give away. As we got close to our hatch day we were feeling pretty attached and decided to keep one bird per person in the family. 8 chickens hatched and one duck. Four of the chickens will be going to our neighbors soon. My flock is 2 month old now.
I heard about backyard chickens just threw reading up on chicken care and how to incubate and all that stuff online, the forums kept popping up in my searches with great info..

Nice little flock! They are so much fun. Nice to meet you. :welcome

:frowWelcome to BYC. It’s nice that you’ve doing this while your kids are small.
Chickens!

Chickens were something that I’d always wanted to raise but it took me more than thirty years to talk my husband into it! :gig
By the time it finally happened, we only had one kid left at home and she was in college.
The rest of the kids humor us like old people (which we AREN’T) when we talk about the chickens.
Research and camaraderie is what brought me here!
