(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? My family always had a flock of chickens (and a few ducks at one point!) when I was growing up, I think the largest the flock ever got was around 30. So I'm not new to chickens, but I have just gotten my very own first flock!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Right now I have ten 1-2 week old chicks
(3) What breeds do you have? 2 Easter Eggers, a Blue Copper Maran, a Cuckoo Maran, a Buff Orpington, a Creme Legbar, a Salmon Faverolle, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a Speckled Sussex, and maybe a Dark Brahma.... It was supposed to be a Dark Brahma, but I think we might have ended up with something else. There are no feathers on it's legs... I'll love it no matter what it is
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Originally we got this flock for the eggs and to be more sustainable with our kitchen waste, but the more I've been doing research and spending time with the new chicks the more I'm looking forward to just engaging with them! I'm already starting to see their personalities coming through, and I'm excited to try fun things with their coop and run to keep them entertained (and to entertain me!)
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Cooking and eating, hiking, backpacking, sewing, reading, watching Netflix (is that a hobby?)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My husband and I have both been working from home since COVID started, and both of our jobs are going to be staying remote indefinitely. We took the opportunity to move out of the city we were living in, and move back to my childhood home which is out in the country. So I live with my husband, my parents, and two dogs. My dog is a husky/malamute who has gotten his teeth on quite a few chickens over the years, so one of the big challenges is going to be keeping him away from the newest flock.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I only recently found BYC, and it was in the nonstop researching I've been doing since getting the chicks about 5 days ago
I've been reading some great threads, and decided I should join the community!
