My name is Nikki and I live in central Pennsylvania. I am married with five children and we have chickens! We love our chickens as pets with the added benefit of their yummy eggs. We feed our chickens, in the summer, with maggots and in the winter with non-medicated/all natural chicken feed. Our coop isn't pretty but it works for our girls! Some day they will have a palace but until then they're safe :) We allow them to free range as much as possible but we live in the woods so it is only safe sometimes. Unfortunately, we learned a hard lesson when an owl got two of our young chickens. After putting up a very high fence it got another one so we had to put a roof on it. Essentially, we have a GIANT cage in our backyard! We diffuse and apply topically 100% pure theraputic grade essential oils for our girls ailments. We are all natural here on this mini farm! I hope to meet some other chicken enthusiasts near central Pennsylvania. We would love to make friends near and far!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You have come to the right place to share and converse with other chicken lovers! Yes, those hawks and predators can be brutal. I keep my birds in a secure run and keep close eye on them while free ranging. We have SO many things lurking and flying.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about anything, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock!

Hi :welcome Nikki

Glad you could join the flock! I too am big on predator proofing things as I also learnt the hard way and lost my original flock to a fox attack. I thought I was predator proof but clearly was not. After that everything was made more secure and all birds are counted in and bolts and locks tripple checked!! It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Sorry to hear about the losses to the owl! I've been fortunate that I've never lost a bird (yet!) to a predator. But, I don't free-range my birds, so their chances of getting attacked are somewhat reduced.

Good luck with your flock! Please make yourself at home at BYC.

Welcome to BYC, Nikki. Glad you decided join our flock. I'm sorry about the loss of your chickens to an owl. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
