We've always had chickens- I was raised with them, and I'm raising my son with them. We had 6-10 backyard hens always. various breeds, but often Light Sussex, and in more recent years we've had Marans, leghorns, Plymouth Rocks.
Currently - we have a few more. I had 120 (red sex links) at most, but I culled a few (old ones) this year, and the fox culled a few too (escape artists). W have 85 today. I want to expand to 300-400 in the coming two seasons.
We raise them on pasture, in an egg mobile, and sell the eggs at farmers market.
My aim in the coming season is to take the first steps in a breeding program - I want to create an egg layer to be for brown eggs what the leghorn is for white eggs. our customers want brown eggs, and I want to move away from hybrids.
a copy of Genetics of the Fowl by F B Hutt is currently winging its way to me, but in the meantime I have plenty of questions for you folks, as breeding isn't really anything we did with proper intent behind it before.
Id be happy to take suggestions on old threads to read through that are relevant to my project.
we also grow and bring Vegetables to the market.
