Hi, we have been raising chickens, mostly for eggs, for the last few years. Our flock is currently down to 5. (we got hit hard by bobcats in Dec) I have always had a mixed flock...raising chicks that were given me.
I moved a few weeks ago and now live on a small farm in the middle of Utah and want to expand the flock. I want to raise enough for eggs for family/friends and also for our of our table fare. I would like to free range them as much as possible.
I'm thinking buff orpingtons and speckled sussex for dual purpose and brown leghorn for eggs. I have lots of questions about many aspects of the whole thing, but will post then in a forum more appropriate than the intro forum.
My wife and I live here with our younger kids, 5 dexter cows, our current 5 chickens, a couple drahthaar, and my daughters ragdoll kitten. In the next few months, we will be adding a couple dozen or so more chickens, some idaho pasture pigs, and my wife's american cocker puppy. I really want a small flock of narragansett turkeys too, but some people try to discourage me from turkeys. (they say you can't really free range them unless you are in the middle of nowhere...and I really want to free range.)
Looking forward to sharing/learning.

I would love to see your Cocker puppy, I used to breed & show them a billion years ago.
If I still remember things at my age, I recall a drahthaar is a German Wirehaired Pointer.

Aaron you may want to ask about free ranging turkeys on the "Turkey forum." Very nice, helpful people there.

Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. :yesss:

Thanks for the welcomes. We are still crazy from the move and will be for some time. Trying to balance work, school, farm, family, etc. Will post some pics in the next couple weeks and start asking questions.
