Daisy-Chick
In the Brooder
hi, I’m new to the world of chicken keeping, I bought black austrolorp and light Sussex eggs, 6 black hatched with one rooster, and 7 sussex also with one rooster. They are 16 weeks old now.
we intend keeping 3 of each and the black rooster. the rest will go in the freezer. I’m hoping to get lots of eggs and meat next year too.
I love watching the chickens scratch around and they all crowd around the gate to meet me when I go out.
It’s been a steep learning curve and had to add extra roost bars to the coop I made, and have tried so many different feeding methods but it’s all good fun
We also have 3 ducks that I moved out of the chicken pen as they are so messy with their pond making it a mud bath which the chickens didn’t appreciate! and they stole all the chicken food so they now have a new pen which they do share with one Light Sussex chicken that had curled toes (we tried boots but she just fell over and was pecked by the other chicks) her toes have straightened quiet a lot now and she has trebled in size since being separated from the other chickens.
