. My flock was once small, too. And all mixed breeds - even more mixed since the roosters matured and some of the ladies started hatching chicks. Every now and again I add a couple more chicks of particular breeds to be able to say, "That's a Barred Rock" or whatever, instead of guessing the parentage of this or that mixed breed chicken hatched by a hen. I've had to explain to visitors that, even though Lola the Cochin is raising those chicks she hatched, some of them weren't even from HER eggs. Broody hens will hatch anybody's eggs. That's why that big ol' black Cochin has yellow chicks, brown chicks, some with clean legs and some with feathered shanks. Or Buffy the BO is raising black chicks with feathered legs. Or Grace the Bantam ....... Something......
is raising a chick now towering over her. Mixed flocks are so pretty to watch.
