Hi there, my name is Jules. I grew up having a few laying hens, but of course, I wasn't in charge of them much as a kid. I always wanted to get back to having chickens as an adult, so when we bought a house on an acre, we designated about a tenth for a chicken yard. My husband likes to overbuild, so he built me a 10' x 10' coop from storage shed plans, modified to house chickens. It's not quite done. I'll finish my work on it this weekend if it doesn't rain, then it's up to my husband to build me roosts and nest boxes.
I screwed up on my first batch of eggs in the incubator, but have more coming to try again. In the meantime, we have a great local feed store, so now I have 5 EE pullets, 5 Buff Orpington pullets, and 8 RIR roosters in my brooder. I may need a bigger brooder. That'll put the heat on us to finish the coop, which really only needs a few things.
I've been slightly obsessive about chickens (and the two lambs I put in the adjacent pen) for the last month or so. I don't really expect it to get better. I'm planning a dual-purpose flock and intend to slaughter most of the roosters as they come of age but I'd like to keep some.
I've been blogging the process on the site I've had for over six years: ...there's got to be a pony in here somewhere, along with gardening, hunting, and general life.
And I don't even eat eggs.
