Hi everyone! I'm just starting out with chickens. I've already had some questions answered on the forum- everybody has been very friendly and informative. ):

A little bit about me: Right now I'm a sahm to DS6, DD5, DS4, and DS3. When they all get to school, I'm sure I'll be headed back to work (I'm an RN), but for now I'm enjoying being with my kiddos. We live more on the country side of things, but we have several neighbors. Close by we have large farms, and some 4h-ers that keep pigs, chickens, rabbits, etc. We have about 1/2 acre-plenty of room for a good size garden and 10 or so chicks....
I have 6 chickens on order to arrive on April 13th, but after seeing the price for shipping, DH has suggested I go to the local TSC and take my chances on ending up with a few roos. They should be getting in some barred rocks and golden comets in this week- so we'll see what happens.

Looking forward to learning a lot from all of you!

You will love those Golden Comets, if you just want lots of eggs, and from TSC they should all be pullets in the tank is labeled pullets. BRs I got a few years back were all males.

Welcome!

Our TSC carries sexed chicks, so 90% girls, usually. They are hatchery sexed so you have the same chance, except with sex links, which should be 100% accurate; they cross two particular breeds, and males and females are different colors. If you're interested in Barred Rocks, they often have them, and you can tell the boys from the girls yourself with at least 90% accuracy.

Thanks for the info!

I was definitely more interested in getting chicks from TSC when I found out they had the sex-link. I figured even though I'm just a beginner, I at least have a better chance at getting the pullets. I actually called TSC on Friday, and they had just got in 125 chicks- went down on Saturday and they were all gone! So I'm going to have to move a little bit faster next time I guess!

Where in central PA do you live? I am in the eastern panhandle of WV. Howdy neighbor. Our local TSC has tanks of 90% pullets in different varieties. Just remember, don't pick the biggest, most active ones

they are bound to be boys.

from Schuylkill County, PA, and a fellow RN!!!

I have many varieties of chickens, but I do think that the sex links are my favorite. They are good layers, and all mine seem to be on the friendlier side.

Good luck, and have fun!!!
