Hi, I'm Nicole! I've owned chickens, or helped with them, several times in my life. This is the first time I've ever raised them from chicks, though. Currently I have 10 babies taking over my master bathroom. I have never wiped, mopped, swept and cleaned an area more than I have in the past couple of weeks! 😅 We're in it for the eggs, on our way to self sufficiency as much as possible, and I'm already a crazy chicken lady.

I swore I'd never own chickens again. Yet, here I am with 6 Golden Comets, 2 Black Sex Links & 2 bantams -just because all the bantams I've ever known were the barnyard baddies that CRACK.ME.UP!

I swore I'd never, EVER own a rooster...and somehow I let myself be convinced that it would be a good idea to have just one Roo for various reasons. So, one of the Black Sex Links is my rooster and the other my hen. Lord help me. I hope with age I've not only grown wiser, but much more patient.

We have an ancient chicken coop and run -I mean ancient- on the property, but it's a decent walk to get out there and not very convenient. Plus, I just don't feel like it's safe enough for my babes and not worth the effort to remodel and invest much money into.

I swore I'd never get chicks before I was fully prepared to house them...and yet, we'll be working on a temporary coop this weekend while we prepare for a permanent coop and extended run. I plan on free-ranging as much as possible, but that means chicken tunnels and fencing. Plenty of fencing. So, I say again -there are 10 little diddles camped out in my bathroom.

I have a feeling I'm going to be spending lots of time here, digging around, looking for answers. I look forward to meeting other crazy chicken people. 😉😁

Nicole, you are a woman after my own heart!

I am still cleaning "chicken dust" out of the cracks and crevices of my guest bedroom where I haven't brooded chicks since, well, last year. Every year, I say to myself, "No more." But I rarely listen.

Last year I went to the farm store for feed and "accidentally" left with three Cochin chicks. Then, a friend who worked at a nearby hatchery and got free chicks gave me five more babies -- including three Bantams. How can you not love those? Sure, two turned out to be roos and one of them went to live with my avian vet's rooster flock because he was, shall we say, a bit surly.

Of course, I didn't have a coop big enough for eight new chickens. Hence, the building of new housing when lumber prices were through the roof.

So, welcome to BYC, and please count me among the crazy chicken people who will be here to help you in any way we can!
