hi. I'm Pam, and I'm a Brit living in Greece.
I took 2 wee chicks off a friend who'd incubated them just over a year ago. They turned out to be a hen and a cock, Donald and Hillary. They are mongrels, whatever the correct terminology is in chicken world :)
When they grew a bit and I realised Donald was a boy I bought another 5 chicks of a local farmer, again I ended up with 3 lovely brown ladies and 2 cockerels.
Donald was full grown by then and rather magnificent so sadly the 2 young cocks bit the dust. Very tasty they were too!
The girl's all eventually started laying and all was going well but Donald became very aggressive, chasing me whenever I went into the pen, and also was ripping the girl's feathers out, so after many last chances and episodes of me dominating him and carrying him round etc as advised he also came to an end last week.
My girls have produced 2 lots of chicks, and one of them is broody again now, so have been given a batch of eggs from a neighbour to hatch. I didn't really want any more but can't resist, especially as they're going to be fresh blood.
So I currently have 13 adults and babies, and another possible 9 in about 20 days. Not bad from 2 a year ago.
I also have 4 rescue dogs and an acre of ground with some veggies.
It's currently roasting hot here, and will be for at least another 6 weeks. The girl's don't seem to mind as they have shade under trees, and I make them puddles with the hose.
