Hi everyone! I do not have chickens yet but wanted to join and educate myself beforehand. I would love any advice, coop ideas and sources, premium feed, etc. I look forward to learning from you all!

Thanks,
Michele:)

HI, Michele, welcome to BYC. Study the forums, ask questions, plan and you will be ready to start your poultry venture.

Welcome to BYC!

The best place to start is in our learning center. Lots of good articles on getting started with chickens and all other aspects of raising them...

We also have Coop Pages from our members you can get an idea as to the design for your coop. Some of these are very easy to follow and some even have plans...

Have you thought about the breeds you want to keep yet? Lots of friendly pet type chickens that are great layers and hardy as well....Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, etc... Here is a couple nice breeds pages you can take a look at for some quick info on the breeds...

And finally, you can stop by your state thread and chat with your chicken neighbors to see how they do things, where they get their supplies, birds, etc...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on! If you have any questions, that is what we are here for. Welcome to our flock!

Hi, and thank you Two Crows and Kelsie! I am learning a lot already but I'm sure I'll make mistakes along the way. I really appreciate the links you sent Two Crows. Great information!

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend,

Michele

You picked good breeds but, it really depends on what you expect from them. Layers, meat birds, show birds, pets, lawn ornaments etc.

Silkies aren't considered reliable layers. They are generally very popular as pets and kids tend to love them. They are known for being good broodies - which means they usually want to hatch eggs and raise the chicks. If you don't have roosters for fertile eggs, you can buy fertile eggs of any breed and allow the silkie to hatch them.

Buff orps often show the same tendencies.

Hi, Diva, thank you for the info. I primarily want them for pets with eggs as a bonus, which is why I figured the Orps might be a good choice as well. If you have any suggestions I am all ears.
