Just wanted to say Hi and introduce myself. I have been doing tons of research on this forum this week (we are iced and snowed in!) We are building a new house (well as soon as this ice and snow melts) on 9 acres. Luckily, we were able to move a mobile home onto our property to live in temporarily while we are building. SOOO....I can go ahead and start expanding our hobby farm this spring! YAY! We already have 3 pet pygmy goats and are super excited to add chickens! We have already picked out plans for our chicken coop and will start building it as soon as the weather breaks. I am thinking I want one day old Sex links and/or Barred Rocks since I really only want hens for now. I wouldn't be able to butcher a roo after I raised it, I just don't have it in me to eat anything I raise

I think we will start with 6, that should be sufficient for our egg needs, I think....

Well, thanks for all the super helpful info on this site! Look forward to spending probably way too much time on here:D

**Tiffany** Stay at home mommy to three great human kids, 3 pygmy goats, a Great Pyrenees, A Lab Mix, A Himalayan Kitty, and 6 Hermit Crabs! And soon to be mommy to some Chicks and Barn cats:D

Welcome to BYC! I started with chickens over the summer and the people of BYC have been great. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.

I started with 6 pullets and 1 cockerel. I soon had more eggs than I could handle. Production dropped off after a while, but I still average 1/2 an egg per day per hen.
