We live in a small country town with five chickens. Until recently we'd held off building up a flock because we thought we'd have to relocate after my husbands post-graduate studies. Found out we're good and steady!
A chicken turned up on our driveway once. She was a black hen of some kind I went outside and she didn't scare. So I popped her in my berry garden with a dog kennel and low and behold, she laid an egg! After many unsuccessful attempts to find her original home, I popped her under my arm and wandered down the road to a friend who kept chickens. My friend christened her 'Missy'.
Now we know we're staying put, we forged a head with our plans. A workmate gave us a free coop, which we spent some time improving.
My darling friend gave me a daughter of Missy to start our flock, and she's christened Twinkletoes. We purchased two Araucana pullets, a black and a lavender. The lavender got rather large and started crowing....hmmm...missed a trick there! We couldn't keep Daisy (Duke?) so he was swapped out for a lemon cochin bantam. Our other Araucana is named Maisy.
Just recently, the same friend has gifted me two more pullets. They're Rhode Island Red x with Twinkletoe's full sister, making twinkletoes their aunty and our kennel layer their grandmother. We call these two the twins or the 'M&M's, Milly & Molly!
So to summerise
Black backyard special - Twinkletoes
Black Araucana - Maisy
Lemon Cochin Banty - Poppy
RIR X Twins - Milly & Molly.
They free range all day, try and sneak into the house, and get locked up at night.
Anyways, that'll do. Pleased to be here!
