I am an American ex-pat and llive on a hectare of land by a river on the West Coast of New Zealand. My husband and I are putting in a half size mandala vegetable garden (six circles of 2 meter diameter each with fruit trees in between). To go with the garden we are making a chicken dome but only for occasional daytime use. At night they will be in a coop and most days in the run attached. Right now we are looking at plans then will build the chicken house and run. Kiwis call hens "chooks". I love BackYardChickens, so much information and generous people to share it.

Sounds like a lovely plan, all the best!

We are new to chicken keeping too. BYC is great for lots of helpful information. I hope it all goes well for you. Happy Building!!

Hello from Tucson, AZ and

Good luck with your chicken plans. Are there trout in that river next to your property?

Thanks for all the nice welcoming messages. BYC is so much fun I figure I am learning and not wasting time. And, yes, there are trout in our river but so far we're too busy building gardens, weeding etc to learn how to fish.
