Hi everyone! I'm Siobhan from Christchurch, New Zealand.
I fell into chicken keeping. I work at a preschool, and was on holiday in America when I learned that my colleagues had decided to get chickens. I came back to discover a chicken coop in the playground and then the next week one of families gave us two hens. When the older one (Mama) got broody we got her some fertilised eggs and then gave the other hen back to the family as she was becoming very aggressive towards Mama as well as the children. Out of six eggs only one hatched, and we called it Lil Peep. We have a small coop and the chickens have the run of the playground from 7.30am-5.30pm every week day (our opening hours), and I let them out over the weekend as well. I think Mama is an Orpington, not entirely sure. Peep is a Silver-spangled Hamburg.
I have become the "chicken keeper" out of all the staff, I absolutely love them to bits and I'm so glad we have them. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago we realised that Peep was a rooster (he started crowing) and I had to re-home him. I never knew how attached you could become to a bird! He was my little baby and I miss him very much. Hoping to get some female chicks soon. Have posted in the "Chicken Behaviours" forum hoping for some advice on my lonely hen.
I am very new to all of this and have kind of been making it up as I go along. This site has been like my chicken handbook lol so thought I should finally make an account! Glad to have found a place where people love chickens as much as me
