I'm pretty much new to chickens.. I had 4 "Ameraucanas" last year that I bought as adolescents (one was chased away by a neighborhood dog) but I got rid of them before the worst of winter arrived. This spring I got day olds: 10 Barred Rocks and 10 Americaunas from the same old farmer as my birds from last year. 9 of the barred rocks and all the Americaunas (likely Easter Eggers) survived till now. The barred rocks are 6 cockerels and 3 pullets and the EEs are 5 and 5. I am going to be cutting back to only 2 boys of each breed and plan to keep all the girls and these boys indefinitely. They have the run of the large farmyard all day (unless I am away). They seem to have a pretty good life and are a pleasure to have around! I'm sincerely looking forward to getting eggs.
I also have 19 East Friesian sheep, 2 highland cattle, a cat, a dog, and an alpaca.
Nice to meet ya!
Dave.
