first time with chickens. in april I got 18 chicks then someone gave me a coop with 3 grown ones. they are fascinating and its amazing how fast they grow. ended up with 1 rooster. also am in the process of adding a 10 x 12 coop to the 5 x 8 one . its fun to watch them grow and get fresh eggs at the same time. thanks for reading

hi there. got some barred rock, leghorn but can't remember what type, rhode island reds. does my coop have to be insulated for the winter months to aid in keeping them warm?

Congrats on the new chickens. Only one rooster in the mix is great. Whoever sexed those chicks was good. As for coop insulation... I'd say it depends on your climate, and even then if it's a good coop the chickens will generate their own heat. I the two external walls of mine insulated, the other two walls are inside my barn. I don't know what size coop you have, but my Mom's coop was VERY open in the cold climate of Idaho. She would buy several bales of straw at the beginning of winter and lined the wire with them, and then used a tarp to cut drafts. It worked like a charm for years.
