Hello. Barbara here. Glad to be a part of this group and have already learned a great deal from all your posts.

My husband and I live north of San Francisco and back in March purchased 6 chicks from a local feed store. We have 1 Ameraucana, 1 Black Sex Link, 2 Black Australorps, 1 Buff Orpington and 1 New Hampshire Red. We kept them in the bathroom for a few days, but because of allergies, and an obsessive border collie, we moved them into their coop/brooder within 2 days. They did really great. The weather wasn't too cold, so 2 heat lamps were enough to keep them warm. It's been fun watching them grow and getting to know each one individually. I've been putting them in a temporary run on the grass for most of the day, letting them free range for about an hour before putting them back into the coop. They love old fashioned oats from Trader Joes and boiled eggs, but haven't developed a taste for fruit or yogurt yet. All in all, they're a lot of fun and we're glad we have them.

Edited to add:
This is the first time either of us have had chickens, but we do have a border collie who seems to really like looking at the chicks. Unfortunately, she likes the poop too:rolleyes:
Hobbies? Well I like to knit and recently have ventured into making yarn with a drop spindle. I'm currently soaking a Columbia fleece in the backyard so that I can truly say I started from scratch (though I didn't raise the sheep - the section of town where we live is not zoned for livestock with hooves). I also play the harp.
