Hello All,

I'm the new owner of two Pekin Ducklings. I've kind of hi-jacked my husband's pets. They were supposed to be his pets but they really seem to be mine. We got them 3 weeks ago as hatchlings from a tractor store and don't know anything about their background. They've really taken over our lives and we're at the point now where we'd do anything for them. Ok, where I'D do anything for them. I'm so in love. ❤️

I found this community while looking up why what I think is my girl duckling has crusty eyes. I don't think I've seen much online that applies to her situation. She seems normal otherwise. My duckies sleep a lot. They nap and eat, nap and eat. They live indoors but I've been having them spend most of the day outside and bring them in in the evening where they rest on a doggie bed together and sleep in a wide and shallow hamper with pine shavings.

Another thing I wonder is do ducks ever need more? Do they want to go on adventures and see new things or are they happy in a good sized suburban yard with two kiddie pools and lots of dirt, weeds and bugs? :)

Funny thing just happened - as I was typing this a stray cat slinked into the yard and I could feel the mama bear anger rising in my chest. How dare he think he can even LOOK at my duckies! I huffed at his audacity and he ran off scared as hell.

Hello, and welcome to BYC!

Congrats on being a first-time duck owner! In case you're unaware, Pekins, along with most heavy-weight ducks breeds need a generous amount of niacin in their diet to help prevent leg problems. If you'd like to read more into this, and find ways to supplement, you can read the link in my signature.

Absolutely, take the ducklings outside as many times you want (weather permitting, of course) you'll also want to supervise them closely to watch out for any predators. Pretty soon you should be able to let them out full-time.
