I'm excited for you! I 'm new here too. I've started out with ducks, just built my first coop and there is nothing more satisfying than doing it yourself! I also worry about my neighbors and the noise factor, there is a great discussion going on in the forum about quiet chickens that I think could help you out, also I was exploring the chicken breed index on BYC and it offered some great info on the temperment and noisyness of different breeds as well as egg production. I will be getting chickens this summer or next spring and personally am getting black australorps and speckled sussexes... both quiet, friendly high egg production birds.

Good luck with your project keep us updated, pictures are always great! Oh, and welcome, welcome!

Oh I am on a search now - I didn't realize any one breed is quieter - but I'll be busy finding out.
