Hi All -My Family raised chickens during the earlier part of my childhood and I want to give my kids the same experience. Not to mention all of the other obvious benefits. I have 1 acre now, in an area that allows chickens, and want to go for it. Saw this ad today and was wondering if this was a fairly good deal and if what are the main things to look for. Is this too many chickens for a family of 5? I plan on giving the extras to friends, neighbors, food shelter, etc. How can I calculate my feed/etc costs?

Thanks for any pointers you can provide.

This is the ad:

I have moved and am deciding to part with my loving flock. To an approved home/owner who enjoys chickens and roosters like I do...ALIVE! Not for eating! There is about 20 birds in total. They are all very friendly and have been raised together from eggs by me. They are all approximately 4 years old and lay green, tan, brown, white, small, medium and very large eggs. Roosters do not fight, and get along and are all a dwarf cochin cross in beautiful colors. Hens range from the same cross, to Turken, Aracauna, Rhode Island Red, Legghorn, Polish, etc. I would like to sell them as a group, which they have always been in. I will also give you any equipment, feeders, waterers, large house, that I have as well.
If you are interested in their very large enclosure, which was an equipment lockup pen for a large coorporation...then I will sell that as well. It is coyote, hawk and bobcat (critter) proof and very, very large. Heavy duty mini chain link panels which bolt or wire together. This is a really neat setup. $350 for EVERYTHING including the chickens! You would have to pickup and haul. It's quite easy to set up, thanks to the panel construction. You won't find anything like this, and I was very lucky when I came across it. Free garage doors (3) were used for the shade/rain protection. You are welcome to take them as well if you buy it. This looks nice and not junky.

As far as the ad goes, it really depnds on what you want. If you just want eggs, you may not even want a rooster let alone several. I, personally enjoy the sounds of roosters but I know a lot of people are sensitive to rooster crows and it bothers them.
For me, part of the joy of chicken raising is the baby stage...I just love chicks! so I probably wouldn't have wanted to start with an already laying flock, but thats just me. A lot of people want to get right into the eggs

lol

but whatever you choose, I'm sure you will have fun exploring this forum. I was just thinking today (as I was telling my cousin how much I love my chickens and telling her which ones were of which breed) that 1 year ago I woud've thought someone who claimed to "love a chicken" was nuts...yet here I am addicted to chickens lol

Thanks danielle82

I'm a little worried about missing the earlier stages too but figured with roosters, I'd get to experience that stage soon enough. I guess what appeals to me most about this ad is all of the equipment. Seems like she has everything I'd need to get started. Definitely need to check into the quantity of roosters she has

from Oklahoma!

You can get the starter flock and then we will give you plenty of help to choose additional breeds to experience the hatching with.

Sounds like a plan. The chickens are 4 yrs old. Is that anything to be concerned about? How long do you get healthy egg production?

That's just a bit too old for me to give an enthusiastic recommendation. They're probably (mostly) still laying, but production is only going to go downhill at this point.

Personally, I would have felt overwhelmed starting out with 20 adult chickens, but that's just me. Cleaning up after 20 chickens sounds like a big project to start out with having had no experience.

We eased into it with four day-old chicks - I would hate to have missed that part, but again, maybe that's just me.

Thanks bawk - that number does seem a bit overwhelming. But I do have experience, albeit from my youth, with cleaning up after chickens...
