Hi Everyone,
I wanted to say hello and a 'BIG THANK YOU' to everyone on this board. This forum has given us a lot of good advice on raising our little babies.
My husband and I had been talking about getting chickens for months when we walked into the local feed store and saw these adorable little peeps that we couldn't resist. We had no chicken coop, no run, no feed, not even a crate to keep them in. We had no idea how fast these cute little fluff balls would grow. Or how much they would eat and poop! They are now 7 weeks old and we've almost finished their coop and run. All built by my husband and myself in over 100 degree heat. We call it our 'beta' model and my husband threatened me not to tell everyone the many mistakes we made. But I think it looks great! Nothing a little paint won't cover up!
We were blessed a little while ago when we went out to close up the coop for the night. All twelve of our babies had gone in by themselves and were on either on the roost or the noggins (bracing between the studs). We couldn't believe that they actually went in on their own. They learned to go in the coop in only 3 days. We're thinking about putting aside some of the egg money for their college education! Only kidding.
I'm scared to tally up how much we've spent on the sweet little bargain $3 chicks. I do know that I'm planning on having that first egg gold plated and made into a plaque. But....my husband and I have had the most fun watching and playing with our chicks. I would have never thought they have such personalities. I guess we're hooked.
