My family and I are looking forward to getting some chickens this spring. I had some when I was young but now finally my family are in a home where we can have a few. My boys are young teenagers but still anxious to get some chickens. Heaven knows we go through a dozen eggs quick. We enjoy keeping a few beehives hoping to add to those numbers. We hunt and fish. Lots of Sports. We own a few beagles. I’m a licensed land surveyor and have sheared a few sheep over the years. Some sheep owners have gave us eggs as a tip. I remember after one weekend we had 8 dozen eggs in the fridge.
Looking to get a few different breeds to try. Something that’s dual purpose. Must be good layers and pleasing on the table. Interested in egg colors. And birds that nice to look at. Wife wants birds with a good temperament. She fed some of our flock long ago when we were dating and the memories are not the fondest.
So looking at Ameraucanas, New Hampshire (or just some browns) and maybe another breed (Bresse, Chantecler, Barnevelder, ?laced wyan’s). A few to try

Anyway, we’re excited
Thanks

Hey Paul, :welcome. The breeds you list are all nice birds(I have a NH and a GL Wyandotte). Another couple that you might want to consider are Sussex and Austrolorps, IMO they are both lovely birds(especially the Sussex) and good layers with calm friendly temperaments. In any case man best of luck with your chooks and hope you enjoy your stay here at BYC there are a plethora of wonderful knowledgeable folks here who are quick with an encouraging word or good solid advice

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

I bet the sheep herders could help you get chickens

Welcome to BYC! Being a Yooper, you'll face some winter challenges raising chickens. Plenty of cold weather folks here, a wealth of knowledge to draw from, have fun. I'm originally from Michigan, and made South Carolina, my final nesting place. I got tired of shoveling snow, winters are generally mild down here. ;)
SNOW yah you know eh
It’s a challenge just to get out of the driveway. 3.5 ft in the yard
Not a true yooper just a transplant
