Hi everybody I haven't joined just to ask this question, I have been waiting until I have some chickens, now the time has arrived and we have inherited a very noisy cockerel, we do live in a rural area but have neighbors close by who are complaining about the crowing, is there anything we can do to quiet him down.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Nice looking birds you have, thanks for sharing the photo.

Roosters do like to make noise, it's just their nature. I'm sorry the neighbors are complaining. I've heard of some limited success with the no crow collars (and some problems) and I guess some have surgery done on their roos to take care of the crowing. The only sure-fire way to silence a rooster is to re-home it or use it for soup (as harsh as that may sound).

Good luck to you, if you're attached to your guy that makes the decision tough.

so glad you decided to join us.

@NorthFLChick has responded with possible solutions. You can search the forums for crow collars and surgery solution and get some opinions on success from those who have tried them.

Wish everyone loved chickens like we do. A crowing roo next door would be more pleasant than barking dogs!

Good luck on your decision.

Here here I'm with you totally unfortunately the neighbours are ex townies and seem to tolerate the barking dogs in the area (go figure). I will percivere as with help from BYC I seem to have tamed him nicely, he was very aggressive and attacked anyone who came near but in just two days after reading advise on here he no longer attacks me, knocking him off the hens seems to work :)

Yep, you have to show Mr. Rooster who's boss (that's you).

One thing you might try if you're determined to keep him, is to put some kind of soundproofing in his coop and block light from coming in early in the morning. Roosters do crow anytime of day but if the neighbors don't like him waking them up and can tolerate his daytime noise, maybe that would be a compromise for everyone.

Never did make sense to me that folks that move out to the country don't like country noises (it sounds as if that's the situation you have). And barking dogs? Not for me! If a dog only barks when it's excited about an intruder or some similar issue, that's one thing...the ones around us do it all day long. I guess they're bored and/or badly trained. There are 18 dogs between the 3 houses closest to us. That's a lot more noise than an occasional rooster crow if you ask me (not that you did, lol).

Anyway, hope things work out for you.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. So glad advice on BYC has helped with your aggressive rooster. Now if only there was advice on taming a squawking neighbor. Have you tried giving him some eggs now and then - as a bribe? Sometimes that works.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I like your avatar pic and the other pic you shared. Very nice! What a handsome rooster and I'm sorry to hear he is being a pill. The other members have given you good advice. I've never had to deal with such an issue so I'm not much help. So I'll just say welcome to the community and good luck!

What a lovely welcome we've had to BYC thank you all, your fantastic advice and support is very welcome. I have ordered a no crow collar and I'll let you know how that works although I'll feel a bit mean using it, also I'm leaving them in the coop until a bit later in the morning about 7:30 is that reasonable? If I have to next I will blank out the window then try bribery lol.
Bert seems to crow more in my company is that usual?
Thanks again Dave.
