HI all,
I've lurked here for a while, learned lots of great stuff. I've posted a few times and figured it is time to introduce my self.
I am not a stranger to country living, having worked on a farm as a teenager. My wife and I have wanted to raise chickens for many years but never took the leap. A friend at church convinced us to raise some cornish/rock cross broilers this summer. We have three kids (9,7, and 2.5) and they were sad that the chickens were not going to be staying here long so we decided to start a small flock of layers too. (already suffering the effects of chicken math)
We have several friends we raise chickens so after talking with all of them, and endless reading we decided to get 9 chicks: 3 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Plymouth Rocks, and 3 Rhode Island Reds. (All Hens I pray!
)
We ordered our layer flock through My Pet Chicken and they were shipped last Monday from Meyer arriving here late Tuesday. They are currently in the brooder while the coop/run construction starts this weekend.
We keep the broilers in a chicken tractor that I built earlier but it is too heavy to move with out a tractor.
Ooops!! Guess I over engineered it. (I tend to to that.
)
Below is a picture of the chicks on their first day here doing what they do best. Sleeping in their food.
