Hi, This is my first post, I am trying to raise chickens in my back yard, but the township ordinance office said raising chickens are not permitted on parcels of less then 5 acres(according to Michigan right to farm act).

I called Department of Agriculture, but I haven't gotten any reply yet, I am just wondering if this is true that I need 5 acres, or somebody misinterpret the law?

Thanks and nice to meet everybody.

from WI. Not sure about the 5 acre rule. It all depends on town/city....ordinance. Here is a link to get you nstarted. You may want to post your question in the section "Local Law/ Ordinance...

http://www.municode.com/RESOURCES/OnlineLibrary.asp

I had to call the city because the ordinane here is vague. Some people suggest to call just for info, not to mention if/that you have x # of chickens.... You can also post in the "Where Am I....." section, maybe someone from your area is posting on the forum. Good luck
